20th anniversary of the Hollywood Leg Drop of Doom

July 7th is a day wrestling fans around the world will never forget. That is the day that Hulk Hogan ditched his say your prayers, eat your vitamins gimmick for the persona that he created when he joined the Outsiders in the New World Order. Growing up as kid during that era i saw the writing on the wall that it was time for Hulk Hogan to be a bad guy because people were already tired of his Hulkamania gimmick in WCW in 95 he was being booed out of the arenas when he was supposed to be cheered. What did Hulk Hogan do, he turned his back on the WCW to align with Kevin Nash and Scott Hall ironically are two other wrestlers that were in WWE before they were signing with World Championship Wrestling.

I still love the line that Bobby The Brain Heenan said when Hulk Hogan came out during the six man tag team match between The Outsiders and their mystery partner vs Sting, Lex Luger and Macho Man Randy Savage. Heenan said “Who side is he actually on” When Hulk Hogan dropped the leg drop on Macho Man, I cheered because I knew it was an evolution of his character coming into play, Little do people realize the team that he turned his back on was the same exact team he had for Fall Brawl War Games against the Dungeon of Doom.

Now speaking of Iconic Heel Turns that have happened, here are some of my favorite memories of good guys becoming bad.

  1. Hollywood Hulk Hogan
  2. Shawn Michaels
  3. Macho Man Randy Savage

Those are three that stuck out in my mind because Randy Savage and Hulk Hogan were known as the mega powers in World Wrestling Federation, at the time Randy thought Hogan was hitting on his manager Ms. Elizabeth and tension flew from their because Randy was over jealous you can say.

Now here are some heel turns that i think should happen in wrestling that could actually help the business in regarding revenue and marketing merchandise.

  1. Roman Reigns: The fans are getting tired of his gimmick of being the last member the shield and being shove down their throats because he needs an evolution of his character.

  1. John Cena: Here is an example of a man that could do a heel turn like Hulk Hogan if they can book it the right way. John Cena has been with the company for 14 years now in this time frame he has been mostly a babyface after his first heel run with the Doctor of Thuganomics when he was feuding with Brock Lesnar.

  1. Dolph Ziggler: Dolph he could benefit from a heel turn ala rockers shawn Michaels with Marty Jannetty because people think he is the second coming of shawn michaels, he has the ability to be a good heel. Now he needs a enforce that can be his backup or to help him steal victories, here is where you bring back someone like Kevin Nash who has stated countless of times to let him manage Dolph.

  1. Jey Uso: Here is a wrestler that could use an evolution in character when he debut on the main roster of WWE from Florida Championship Wrestling he was in a tag team with his brother Jimmy Uso, this is where you can have the brothers turn their backs on each other to go their separate ways for a while to see how the single wrestling works for them compared to being held down being a tag team wrestler.

I have listed my choices for wrestlers that need an evolution which could be a simple addition to their gimmick or a new look and attitude and persona, Follow me on twitter @WarriorMW23 so we can discuss your ideas of wrestlers who need a change.
